Focus: DIY & ToolBox TomGirl takes a hit

September 23, 2010

Last week was a very humbling experience for me. I, the ToolBox TomGirl, went to the job without the proper tools. What was I thinking? Who knows, but apparently I was not thinking about the job at hand. And that’s what I want to talk to you about. Not just about having the proper tools for the job, but also about taking time to think about what is ahead.

Would you curl your eyelashes with an eyelash curler that did not have the rubber piece in it? Would you file your fingernails with a tongue depressor? No? I didn’t think so. Well, that’s about what I did when I showed up to my first DIY night with the girls and did not bring my own tools (the ones we needed).

I wonder if you can feel my pain.

So, what did I learn from this? To be prepared? Yes, of course. But even something more: I learned about one tool we all need to use every day of our lives. Focus.

Take time to focus on what is important: yourself – including your health and well-being. Take time to keep your mind clear of clutter so that you can focus on the job at hand. If you have the tool of focus, it’s likely you’ll also remember all the other tools you need.

Go out and do what you need to do, but do it with your head clear and your eyes wide open. Stay in the moment and be prepared.
