Spring Cleaning: Do you or don’t you?

April 15, 2010

Okay- this inquiring mind wants to know – how many of you actually do spring cleaning? You know, take down the “drapes” (do we even use them anymore?), send the rugs for cleaning, wash AND wax the floors (on hands and knees), wipe down the walls, windows, ceilings; And oh my gosh – the baseboards.

How many of you wash all the comforters from the beds, replace the pillows, have the carpets cleaned, suck the crap from the heat ducts…..

I mean, why can’t I do the fun stuff – like: hammer back in the long nails on the gutters, ride or push the mower around the yard and get to smell the newly cut grass, pretend to clean the garage, clean the patio furniture (sort of), set up the hammock (and try it out to see if it works), pull the screens down in the windows (and fix any holes in them), replace the storm door with a screen door, climb the ladder to clean the gutters, and finally how come I can’t say “Honey, I’m tired from working on all this stuff, I need a nap?”

Oh right – that was me last year – Okay – this year I promise to turn over a new leaf (not one that fell from the tree though – those have already been raked, bagged and taken to the landfill thank you very much)

So really – which do you do? Or, are you like me and do both?

Technically speaking I do spring cleaning, but I usually do it in January while taking down the holiday decorations. It’s a good feeling!

I started doing it when I heard an old saying about it being bad luck to bring last year’s dirt into the new year – so you are really supposed to do it on New Year’s Day, but…well, that seemed a bit extreme! The only thing I do when spring finally arrives is wash the windows.

My kind of woman! I hate cleaning as it is but then to find out I was supposed to do all that other stuff just killed me. I basically like to do the “fix it” stuff and pretend I don’t see the rest. (SMILE). Since I enjoy the home repairs I don’t lose sleep over the other things. If I notice it, I clean it. My house is clean but definitely not what a cleaning guru would want.

But – it seems I am always noticing the things that I like fixing the most, loose door handle, chipped piece of tile, grout needing redone, caulking, and of course, I ALWAYS do the Spring check up around my house so that I am energy efficient when I need to turn on the air conditioning. I’m a repair dork.

I am definitely more of an anti-clutter nut than I am a clean freak. Don’t look in the corners or behind the furniture – I don’t have dust bunnies, I have dust elephants.

I like fixing things, but often by the time I get what I need to do the fixing, the moment has passed and I don’t want to do it anymore. So, I try to make a list of things that need fixing and buy what I need. Then, when the mood strikes, I am ready to go!
