Tina Turner Rakes The Yard: With Me!

April 2, 2011

It was the perfect pre-season day. Not for football, baseball, or any other sport. Nope, it was leaf raking day. The sun was out, I had my iPod hooked up with great music, I had taken 800mg of Motrin, stretched out my back and I was ready to go. I had it all planned out; I was going to rake enough leaves to fill one recycling bin, take a stretch and water break, and then go back to work – smooth raking. Repeat the cycle. I was in control. After all, I am now a woman on a mission and my yard needed some serious help. This too can be taught to my DIY women. It’s not just about home repairs – it’s about home maintenance.

I turned up the music, a Tina Turner mix, donned my polka dotted gloves and grabbed my garden rake. Off we went, dancing like pros across the yard to the garden. Holy cow! When did that tree grow in the middle of my garden? This was not in the plan. I raked around it for awhile and then Tina and I decided, after a rendition of “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, that the tree needed to go. My neighbors might have thought I was a little nuts when they eyed me swinging a saw and singing the lines:

I’ve been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I’ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way

What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken

Whatever. I knew the tree needed to go. It was not in the right place and it was messing with the balance of what was supposed to be there. So – off with it’s head (out with its heart, off with its legs – you get the picture).

Yes – I then did the stretch and water break.   (and those of you that believe that’s me with the stretch ball can think again)

Okay – I’m not going to bore you with the rest of the yard raking story. Tina and I sang a lot that day. Across the yard and through the gardens we sang things like:

Close your eyes follow me

I’ll show you a world you’ve never been to

Take a ride in my love machine

And I won’t do anything you can’t get into

What I got is what you need

And you won’t do a thing about it

Oh – and I did end up singing with Donna Summer a little (Bad Girls). I had to – I mean, what hard working woman could NOT sing that song after raking leaves, breaking her back, sweating, singing, and dancing, and then hauling all the yard crap to the dump.   Exactly.

And at that night you probably felt like you had climbed a mountain high and crossed a river deep!
